from Anatolia - Turkey
Felt-making is one of the oldest ways of making fabric, and it is thought to have been around for about 8000 years. It was probably developed by the various tribes of Central Asia, that was once referred to as ‘ the land of felt’ by the Chinese. This method of making fabric traveled to the West along with the movements of Central Asians.
Today in different parts of Anatolia the method is still being used widely for utilitarian objects such as floor coverings , mats, bags , clothing etc..
Examples such as this one were used in the yurts (tents) of the nomadic tribes located around Konya. Made of undyed wool, these felts were used to decorate the inner wall of the roof of the tent and are thus found in a variety of formats.
